EdgeAlliance President receives DIFFA Award

February 23, 2010 - CHICAGO - Jim Flosi, Founder, President and CEO of EdgeAlliance, receives the Excellence in Care Award from the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). The award was graciously accepted with this speech:

“First of all, I would like to thank the members of DIFFA and its Board for deciding that our mission and work reaches the quality and standards acceptable for granting this award. And secondly, I would like to add my congratulations to all the awardees this evening. I know how difficult our work is and how sporadic the rewards are.

As some of you already know, we have been in existence for over 17 years serving families and individuals who are homeless and disabled with advanced HIV/AIDS. In our first 11 years, we housed and supported over 250 individuals who were both dying and living with AIDS in our house on Barry, in the Lakeview neighborhood. Within the past six years, we have built three new apartment buildings, adding a total of 66 new units of studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments to respond to the need for more housing for the poor and the sick. At present, we are housing over 125 children, women and men affected by HIV/AIDS in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago, North Lawndale. It is our continued mission to respond to this need with advocacy and determination.

As you also may know, we changed our name on October 1, 2009 from AIDSCare to EdgeAlliance. In doing this, we have expanded our mission and vision to not only continue to serve the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, but also to respond to the contemporary needs of Veterans, the Homeless, and the Disabled.

Besides developing a new and needed alliance for non-profits which will respond to the immediate and future organizational and structural changes necessary for non-profits to exist, our next building project will consist of two new buildings: a 36 unit studio apartment building for homeless Veterans, and a Progressive Life Center, which will address the physical, financial and psychological needs of, not only the residents on the Campus, but also the needs of the poor in North Lawndale.

We have set an ambitious goal for ourselves, and as many have told me, we have achieved incredible success in a relatively short time. But no time is short enough to build new housing, providing progressive services or responding to the legitimate needs of those on the edge of society.

It is because of organizations like DIFFA, and the support which they give us to continue our work with our families affected with HIV/AIDS, that we are able to do the things that we do with dignity, integrity, and compassion.

Again, thank you!”
